Ghoomer: Gripping, cricketing redemption

A must-watch movie

The film revolves around Anina (Saiyami Kher), a technical and sublime right-handed batter who loses her right hand in an accident the night before she was going to make a debut in international cricket. Paddy Sir (Abhishek Bachchan) uplifts her that she can still play for India in next England series coming in 10 months as a left-handed bowler. She thinks about it and approaches him for personal coaching.

She trains hard with impromptu and fierce training methods designed by Abhishek Bachchan. Training involved converting a backyard jungle into a 22 yard pitch by axe and cutters, making food including lime-juice on her own and staying hungry for playing for India by constantly thinking about bowling and taking wickets. They also invent a new bowling style to dismantle the opposition batter and Amitabh Bachchan (commentator) named it ‘Ghoomer’. This bowling style is performed by rotating the body and using the body force to generate speed and dismiss the batter by deception. This bowling style video goes viral and the selectors upon seeing it decides to pick her for the series. She manages to take ample of wickets with that bowling style in the first match against England but that is not all. She also bats with left hand when needed by the Indian team. This was not in their plans as selectors decided to take her as a specialist bowler and stated that Indian team will bat with only 10 players. Anina hits a four when 3 runs were needed to win the match and this is how India wins the match against England and deliver the message that ‘passion can pursue anything’.
