Cheteshwar Pujara is a professional cricketer from India who plays as a top-order batsman in the Test format of the game. He is known for his solid technique and ability to bat for long periods of time, making him a valuable asset to the Indian team. Pujara made his Test debut in 2010 and has since become a regular member of the Indian Test squad. He has also played for various domestic teams in India, including Saurashtra and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
Pujara’s ability to bat for long periods of time and grind out tough runs makes him a valuable asset in Test cricket. He has been a consistent performer for India in Test cricket, with an average of 47.74 in 85 matches.
Pujara’s performances in the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia were crucial in India’s historic series win. He batted for over 900 minutes in the series and scored three half-centuries and a century, including a match-winning 56* in the fourth Test.
However Pujara’s current form is not good. Pujara scored only 686 runs in the last 14 innings, with an average of 28.58 .
In the WTC final Pujara scored only 14 and 27 runs which is one of the reasons for India’s loss in the WTC.
In the upcoming West Indies tour, Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped from the Indian test team however due to this decision by the BCCI. Former cricketers are not happy with this decision.
“Why is he [Cheteshwar Pujara] dropped? Why is he being made the scapegoat for our batting failures? Because he doesn’t have millions of followers on whatever platforms who would make a noise in case he gets dropped?”
-Sunil Gavaskar
Looks like now the BCCI is thinking about the future of the Indian test team.BCCI selected Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi jaiswal for the test series against West Indies.
But it can also backfire the Indian team as Pujara is our best test batsman. His temperament and calmness helped India in tests for a very long time.
Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh said:
“Cheteshwar Pujara is backbone of Indian Test team, hope he has been rested, not dropped”
Conclusion: yes, Pujara has been a backbone of the Indian cricket team for a long time but seeing his current form it’s fair to say the BCCI have to look at the future of the Indian test team.
